If you would like to create a private forum for a subset of your members, the following instructions will guide you through the process.
While we support private forums, please remember that our terms of service require 90% of your forum to be public. Also you may create as many post & reply restricted forums as you like, but there is currently a limit of 2 private forums, to prevent abuse of our policy.
Go to your administration panel.
Create the forum if you haven't already under Forum Admin -> Management.
Then go to Forum Admin -> Permissions and go to Advanced Mode. Set the individual forum permissions as needed.
You can allow only members or certain groups to post in a forum, yet keep the forum publically viewable and readble. Just adjust the forum permissions as needed. For example VIEW and READ might be set to ALL, but POST and REPLY set to PRIVATE.
VIEW = ALL :: Everybody can see that the forum exists
VIEW = REG :: Only registered members can see that it exists
VIEW = PRIVATE :: Only a designated group can see that it exists
READ = ALL :: Everybody can read the posts
READ = REG :: Only registered members can read the posts
READ = PRIVATE :: Only a designated group can read the posts
POST = ALL :: Everybody can make new topics
POST = REG :: Only registered members can make new posts
POST = PRIVATE :: Only a designated group can make new posts
REPLY = ALL :: Everybody can make replies
REPLY = REG :: Only registered members can make replies
REPLY = PRIVATE :: Only a designated group can make replies
The PRIVATE setting applies to a Group.
Now go to Group Admin -> Management and create the new group, if the group hasn't already been created. A group must have a Moderator which is the member that may approve requests to join the group (along with the administrator). An Open group provides a public place where members may request to join the group, Closed groups don't and the admin must add any new members .
Next go to Group Admin -> Permissions. Here select the group. Look for the private forum in the list and set the group to Allow Access to the forum.
Now whether you've made your group open or not, you may want to add members to the group, so go to your forum home page and click on the Usergroups link, select the group and you will be able to add members.
If you've made your group open, requests to join the group will be queued until the group moderator or forum administrator approves or denies entry to the group.
After following these steps, members added to the group will automatically have access to the private forum. |
